Why this matters: Six months from now, when someone questions a design decision, you have evidence to reference. Your repository is your design insurance policy.
Even when designers do discovery, they often do it wrong. Here’s what to avoid.
Going through the motions without genuine curiosity. Asking questions to check boxes, not to learn.
Symptom: Discovery findings confirm exactly what you already thought.
Fix: If you’re not surprised by anything in discovery, you didn’t dig deep enough. Good discovery always reveals something unexpected.
Users say “I want dark mode.” You build dark mode. They don’t use it.
Why: Users were actually saying “my eyes hurt during long sessions.” Dark mode was their proposed solution, not their actual need. There might be better solutions.
Fix: When users request features, always ask “what problem would that solve for you?” Get to the underlying need and validate assumptions in UX before you waste time building the wrong thing.
“Users are frustrated with the interface” is not discovery. It’s a starting point.
Fix: Keep asking why. Why frustrated? What specifically? In what context? What were they trying to do? What did they expect? Keep digging until you hit root cause.
